Call for Proposals

The proposals are limited to two pages including references. Please use the same template of the SIGSPATIAL conference as explained at https://sigspatial2019.sigspatial.org/cfp/

The proposals will be reviewed by the workshop chairs and advisory committee. In case of acceptance, at least one presenter will have to register to the SpatialAPI workshop.

Description
The goal of this workshop is to provide students and researchers with hands-on experience with useful APIs such as web APIs or library APIs related to spatial data processing. At the same time, it gives an opportunity for API providers to reach out to targeted audience that can use their APIs. This will be an excellent opportunity for researchers to get familiar with the APIs that are available for their research and development. At the same time, the API providers will be able to get a direct feedback for their users to understand how to further improve their APIs and make them more user-friendly.
The tutorials will be done in a classroom-style setting where the audience will bring their laptops to follow the directions of the presenter. The room will be provided with a projector for the presenter and power and Internet for everyone. The organizers will be happy to entertain additional requirements by the presenters based on availability. We will encourage the speakers to share their material before the tutorials so that students can download any required datasets and install any prerequisite software.

Tutorial 1: GIS++: Modern C++ for Efficient and Parallel In-Memory Spatial Computing

Abstract:

In this workshop, the participants get a deep dive to spatial computing on top of the Boost Geometry Library in C++. The workshop will highlight core concepts of generic programming, give hands-on experience in the area of OGC geometry and range and nearest neighbor queries based on arbitrary combinations of OGC and custom predicates. Finally, the tutorial gives an outlook how easy it has become to interface with covering libraries including GDAL, Python, and OpenGL.

Tutorial 2: Interactive 3D Web Mapping with HERE Technologies

* How to display a WebGL enabled 3D map in your browser using HERE harp.gl
* How to efficiently store and tile large amounts of geo data for data visualization use cases with HERE XYZ

Tutorial 3: Spatial Data Wrangling with GeoSpark - A Step by Step Tutorial

Abstract:

This tutorial is expected to deliver a comprehensive study and hands-on tutorial of how GeoSpark incorporates Spark to uphold massive-scale spatial data. We also want this tutorial to serve as an introductory course that teaches the audience the basic building blocks in a scalable spatial data management system and the important design concerns based on our previous expe- rience. We begin our tutorial with a background introduction of the characteristics of spatial data and the history of distributed data management systems. A follow-up section presents common approaches used by the practitioners to extend Spark and intro- duces the vital components in a generic spatial data management system. The third section gives a hands-on live demonstration to illustrate the basic steps of performing geospatial data analytics using GeoSpark.

Abstract:

In this tutorial, we present a use case for handling a real-world spatio-temporal dataset on a cluster with the DBMS Secondo. First, we provide an introduction to the system and its distributed capabilities. The main part of the tutorial then focuses on processing a set of taxi trajectory data, including the raw data import, distribution on several workers, indexing with different structures, querying the indexed data, and inserting updates. Participants having installed the system (or the corresponding Virtual Machine) and extracted the dataset will be able to follow the tutorial actively.

Tutorial 5: Rasdaman: Open Standards Based Scalable Datacube Analytics

Abstract:

Flexible, scalable services on massive geo data receive much attention today. In particular, the OGC Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) standards suites have established a best practice for versatile access and analytics on spatio-temporal "Big Data". In this workshop, the participants get a deep dive into the standards, covering both data and service models, as well as the latest advancements in the AP Is used to access the services. Hands on exercises will be used throughout the workshop to exemplify and cement the concepts.
