The GFZ facility will provide OGC TC attendees with wireless access to the Internet, via logins. Those attendees that require VPN must coordinate with OGC Staff to ensure the GFZ IT Staff can be on-hand to help with setup.

The main building is a mobile phone dead zone -- by design, so you may need to plan accordingly.

Lunches will be available from 13.00 - 14.00 hrs daily in the GFZ Cafeteria. The Lunches cost about 4.35€ + VAT or about 5.20€ per day, please have cash available for your Lunches.

From *Berlin-Tegel Airport* please take *Express Bus (Line X9)* to *"Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten"*. Buses operate between 5:30 a. m. and 11:30 p. m. in frequent intervals (10 minutes). The bus ride takes about 30 minutes.

At "Zoologischer Garten" enter the train station across the bus stop and take *Railway Line RE 1*, direction Brandenburg or Magdeburg. This train commutes between Berlin and Potsdam and runs every 30 minutes. Get off this train at Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof. The train ride takes approx. 20 minutes.
Total travelling time from the airport to Potsdam: 60 - 90 minutes

For public transport please purchase a ticket "Berlin ABC" which is also valid for Potsdam.

*Taxi / Tram*

From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof you reach the Steigenberger Hotel Sanssouci comfortably by taxi within 5 minutes. Fare: approx. EURO 5,00 one way (tip not included).

    Below are some travel notes from one of our hosts:

    PLANES
    There are only cheap holiday flights to holiday destinations to and from Exeter Airport, such as Murcia and generally only one per day or less.

    Travel to and from Bristol Airport has more international destinations, but generally you need a car to get there and back from Exeter. Public transport is possible but is not joined up.

    I nearly always travel to/from London Heathrow [LHR]. Terminal 5 is best.  Terminals 1,2,3 are OK too. Try to avoid Terminal 4 (30 mins away from others).

    Then take RailAir bus, every 30 mins, to Reading main train station [RDG], buying the RailAir ticket on the bus.  London Paddington [PAD] trains pass through every hour to Exeter St Davids, takes 1 1/2 or 2 hours (300km). This is faster and cheaper than travelling into London and back out.

    Flights to/from Gatwick [LGW] are feasible too. Trains hourly to Reading main station take 1 1/2 hours.

    Travel to/from London City Airport is the next in priority and inconvenience. Then London Stanstead, then Luton (never!).

    TRAINS
    The mainline station in Exeter is Exeter St David's [EXD], 3/4 mile, 1.3 km from the City centre and fast trains from London Paddington station are about every hour.

    Exeter Central station [EXC] is in the city centre, but generally only has local slow commuter trains. Cheaper, but much slower, stopping trains, do travel from London Waterloo [WAT] to Exeter Central, by a different route, taking 3 1/2 hours minimum.

    Buy your train, and RailAir bus, tickets on the Web as far in advance as possible, say 2 months - much cheaper, but fixed trains and seats, without refunds. If you book too early though, say 3 months and one week, the cheap tickets will not have been posted.

    Please note the booking reference number and which card you used to pay for the tickets.

    You can collect your pre-paid tickets at ticket machines in most train stations, but unfortunately, there is no  ticket machine at London Heathrow Airport to pick up RailAir tickets. The machines are all shapes and sizes, but generally have a touch screen with two or three big pink 'buttons'.  

    Lots of web sites sell tickets - all basically the same, connected to the national infrastructure.

    First Great Western http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ run the Paddington trains and do not charge for debit/credit card transactions, but charge for an SMS message.

    http://www.thetrainline.com is run by Virgin, but has identical tickets etc. Free SMS but charges for card transactions.

    BUSES
    There is a No. 56 bus from Exeter St Davids train station more or less direct to the Met Office every hour but very badly timed for London trains.

    The line H bus, every 15 mins, goes from Exeter St Davids Station into the city centre via Queen Street and the High Street.   

    The 'Park and Ride' buses, every 12 mins, from Paris Street/High Street go very near the Met Office. This is the best bus for those staying in the City Centre. Daily and weekly tickets are available on the bus.

    GENERAL
    Transport reliability is good, except that planes landing towards the end of the day may be late.

        The airport is well connected to the city centre by Airport-shuttle-bus No SB60 leaving from Terminal 2 every twenty minutes (a single ticket is 6.70 €). It is also possible to rent a car or take a taxi, of course. The distance between airport and main train station is around 30 km.

        Arriving at the Airport Frankfurt (Rhein-Main):
        Distance to the center of Bonn: about 170 km
        For those arriving in Frankfurt airport, we recommend to go to the "long distance train station (Fernbahnhof)" of the airport:
        Either you take
        - any of the IC trains going to Mainz, Koblenz and Bonn (central station)
        and continuing to Cologne etc. or you take
        - the fast "ICE" train to "Siegburg/Bonn", and take the tram to Bonn from there. There is only one tram line (No. 66) departing in Siegburg/Bonn station; get off at "Universität/Markt".

        The IC train will take you in 1 hour and 45 minutes to Bonn. The ICE train will need on a maximum speed of 250 km/h about 39 minutes to reach Siegburg. The remaining 15 km will take you at least as much (including waiting and change over time).

         

        By railway/underground:

        from Bonn Hauptbahnhof main station:
