The France Interoperability Day is geared to those organizations that plan and implement systems that involve sharing and using Geographic Information across the Internet. It is aimed to be of interest across both the public and private sectors.

The France 'Interoperability Day' event is being hosted by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and is scheduled for July 11 2007 as part of OGC’s Technical Committee meetings.

The days events will cover a host of issues regarding the use of OGC and ISO standards such as Geography Markup Language (GML), Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) that provide the interoperability essential for Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) at different levels -- from European to national to regional (in line with the new INSPIRE directive) to all over the globe. This is an opportunity to learn about best practices from acknowledged international experts on the benefits of using open standards when implementing SDI components. French will be the only language presenters will use. No simultaneous translation will be offered.

The speakers at this event will come from across Europe and beyond, they have been asked to cover areas like; the problems they sought to solve, why they chose an interoperable route based on open standards, technical approach, lessons learned, etc. At the end of the day, we want to help those who want to build operational systems and are asking speakers to provide reference material where they can.

Call for Papers

The organizers of the OGC's France Interoperability Day (see website at: http://www.opengeospatial.org/event/070711interop) are seeking potential speakers to submit papers related to geospatial interoperability using open standards within one of the following topic areas:

  • Interoperable Technology Development
  • Earth Observation & GMES Application
  • INSPIRE-related Applications and Geosciences Services on the Web
  • Interoperability Demonstration (must contain multiple partners)

Organizations and individuals are welcome to supply an abstract of no more than 300 words so that the organizers may evaluate candidate papers by June 1, 2007. Those who are selected to submit a paper are required to submit final versions by July 1, 2007.

A subset of those selected to submit a paper will be invite to prepare and present their paper in presentation form of no more than 15 minutes during the France Interoperability Day event. Presenters are asked to use slides (PowerPoint or OpenOffice Presentation) and will also participate in a panel covering the general topic area. The presentation will need to submitted by July 1, 2007 for compilation on the OGC web site. Presentations must be non-commercial, promote geospatial Interoperability. Presentations will need to be prepared in French and conducted in the French language, no translation services will be provided.

Abstracts (300 words or less) should be sent, along with complete contact details to: papers [at] opengeospatial [dot] org

Business Seminar

Best practice makes perfect with Open Geospatial Standards

Thursday 25th January 2007, 0930-1530

British Geological Survey Offices, Nottingham, UK

Effective use of geographical data underpins many critical business and governmental decisions and strategies - in marketing, distribution, sales, planning, environmental protection, defence, security, service provision or any one of a dozen other areas of business, local and central government.

All too often business decisions and support systems are based upon what is perceived to be the most cost effective application of geographic information and processing systems. Often they are made with cursory thought towards the reduction of technology life cycle costs and open spatial standards.

A few questions to consider.

  1. How well you make use of geospatial information (GI) to enable your operations? This can make the difference between profit and loss, between effective provision of public services and failing services.
  2. How will you adapt your current products and services to exploit new capabilities and how will you protect today's investments from tomorrow's disruptive technologies?

This Seminar was aimed at all decision makers and managers who have to face these challenges in the coming months and years, it helped describe how to achieve interoperability across technologies, how to future-proof your investments and present best-practise for optimal results.
