OGC’s Military Pilot Project, Phase 1, sponsored by the US Army Engineering and Development Center (ERDC), was a collaborative effort that contributed to the operational validation of interoperable commercial geoprocessing products for the defense and intelligence domain. MPP-1 addressed the problem that no single vendor’s commercial products meet all the diverse requirements of defense geoprocessing, and the diverse products from different vendors that might meet these requirements don’t, without OGC's standards, interoperate.
The IE will attempt to address some of the following experiments around the use of GML in JPEG 2000 for Geospatial Imagery:
This Interoperability Experiment (IE) will address several important steps towards the development of a Geospatial Semantic Web (GSW), where discovery, query, and consumption of geospatial content are based on formal semantic specification. Many pieces of the GSW puzzle have been worked extensively in the last several years; this experiment aims to augment WFS/FE with a semantic query capability, through the definition of an ontology for the geospatial intelligence community.
In this pilot project, OGC partnered with the US Department of Transportation (Bureau of Transportation Statistics) and FGDC to test the use of data content models for practical application by cooperating communities, specifically focusing on Road Transportation data. OGC tested and demonstrated the use of FGDC's Road Transportation Data Content Standard with software products that employ OpenGIS® Specifications such as Web Feature Service (WFS) and Geography Markup Language (GML).
Testbed. The 2000 Geospatial Fusion Testbed addressed standard ways of "fusing" disparate kinds of data into one spatial framework. Such data include text with embedded place names as well as video, sound, and photos whose metadata refer to "place." Through Geospatial Fusion, they can be geo-indexed, integrated with other spatial data, and shared across the Internet. The Testbed mainly addressed text, but OGC's specifications will accommodate the other kinds of data.
