OWS-9 Aviation Thread

The Aviation Thread of OWS-9 built on the Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) and Aviation threads of OWS-6, OWS-7 and OWS-8 respectively as well as the FAA Special Activity Airspace (SAA) Dissemination OGC Pilot. The OWS-9 Aviation Thread further developed and demonstrated the use of the Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) and the Weather Information Exchange Model (WXXM) in an OGC Web Services environment. Furthermore, efficient management of data transmissions between this environment and client applications deployed in aircrafts were explored.

The Aviation Thread of OWS-9 covered:

  • Advancing the Aviation Architecture:
    • Investigating functionality to support improved retrieval of aeronautical and weather information via Web Feature Service and Event Service
    • Exploring the representation and efficient management of metadata – including data provenance
    • Developing support for efficient communication between Aviation services and clients located on an aircraft
    • Pursuing work in the areas of discovery as well as interoperable styling and portrayal
    • Integrating functionality to perform geometry processing via Web Processing Service
  • Advancing system stability and compliancy:
    • Testing and analyzing the performance and endurance of critical data provisioning services – Web Feature Service and Event Service
    • Advancing the Temporality Extension support in Web Feature Services serving aeronautical information
  • Advancing modeling tool support:
    • Investigation and development of conceptual modeling and mapping tool support.

AIRM Derivations


  • Developed simple transformation & mapping rules for generating implementation schema from AIRM (ATM Information Reference Model)

  • Successfully transformed AIRM and automatically generated GML/JSON plus code list dictionaries and feature catalogue

  • Applied existing UML to GML Application Schema software
    → consistent schema generation

Data Provision

Implemented and tested advanced filtering functionality to:

  • Selectively retrieve metadata
  • Provide DNOTAMs at a specific update rate
  • Simplify spatial filtering based upon the spatial extent of AIXM features:
  • AIXM feature as geometry operand
    • Non-spatial feature query
    • Simplify common filtering tasks: stored query / stored filter
  • Take into account the actual shape of an airspace, >2D (Altitude query)

Data Transmission Management

  • Investigated and analyzed AAtS concepts, especially Data Management Service (DMS) requirements, and related technologies.

  • Defined first version of modular service specification supporting DMS requirements and interoperable DMS systems.

  • Implemented and tested DMS prototypes – both clients and services.

Geometry Processing

    • Intersection Profile (calculate the intersection of two AIXM 5.1 features)
    • Spatial Relation Profile (perform various boolean spatial relations operations on AIXM 5.1 features (e.g. Contains, Covers, Crosses))

Metadata Use

  • Efficient Retrieval of Metadata using proposed CSW-ebRIM 2.0 ‘view’ parameter
    • MD_Metadata skeleton returned with resolvable links to descendent objects. User can traverse the tree to the descendent Metadata objects by pointing and clicking.

  • Metadata Transfer options tested:
    • SOAP Header, SOAP Body, Dataset Payload Body (GML Based Data)

    • OGC WFS for airport map data delivery
    • OGC FPS for rendering the airport map and Digital NOTAM events
    • OGC CSW / WRS to query WFS data sources and styling information
    • Custom business logic isolated in an OGC WPS

  • Use of Portal Based Client workflows
    • Approach of using light wrapper services to mediate OGC Services

Temporality Extension

Step 9
  • Finished first version of a specification that adds rich query functionality to WFS/FES, tailored to AIXM Temporality Model
    • can also be used to manage Dynamic Feature Data in general (applicability to other domains)
  • Prototype implementation and testing
  • Created OGC Discussion Paper for TE specification
    • Paves the way for normative OGC document and thus eventually conformance testing and certification

OWS-9 Aviation - General

  • Performed FAA SWIM compliance analysis

  • Designed and tested functionality to simplify retrieval of AIXM data
  • Harvested, transformed and loaded datasets (style information) as well as (ISO encoded) dataset and service metadata to Registry to support discovery use cases

  • Demonstrated feasibility of performing Aviation processing tasks in a web based fashion via WPS (→ towards web based processing toolbox for Aviation)

  • Designed and demonstrated first version of DMS specification, in support of Data Transmission (to Aircraft) Management requirements

  • Demonstrated client software providing map-centric displays with intuitive user interface, supporting interactions with OWS-9 Aviation services such as WFS, Event Service, DMS
