OWS-8 Cross-Community Interoperability

Thread Architect:
Luis Bermudez, Ph.D.
OGC

The OWS-8 CCI thread seeks to increase interoperability within communities sharing geospatial data, including advancing of interoperability among heterogeneous data models, advancing strategies to share map symbology styles, improvement of KML, and advancing schema automation, allowing communities to better share their information artifacts.

These are the main task areas:

  • Advancement of semantic mediation approaches to query and use data based on multiple different data models, which are available via OGC Web Feature Service.
  • Advancement of the use of style registries and styling services.
  • Advancement of the use of OGC KML.
  • Advancement of the use of Unified Markup Language (UML) and Object Control Language (OCL) for Schema Automation on Domain Models.

OWS-8 CCI Objectives

  • Semantics Mediation
    • - Investigate, evaluate, and demonstrate the benefit of semantic mediation approaches (e.g. ontologies, mappings, SPARQL) to query and use data, based on different data models, made available via OGC Web Feature Services
  • Portrayal
    • - Investigate, evaluate, and demonstrate the use portrayal registries for KML, SLD and/or SE.
    • - Advance KML encoding support for different styles per feature type.
    • - Advance KML encoding to support layers.
    • - Add KML support for child elements in a BalloonStyle to specify, for example, styles and scripts.
  • Schema Automation
    • - Enhance the ShapeChange tool to support ISO 19139 UML/OCL-to-XML application schema encoding rules to include metadata profiles (both restriction and extension).
    • - Develop UML/OCL-to-XML application schema encoding rules for the family of Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) standards Develop UML/OCL-to-XML application schema encoding rules for the family of Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) standards.
    • - Implement ShapeChange support for formal rules to create corresponding XSD-based schemas from UML/OCL-specified SWE domain models.

OWS-8 CCI Scenario

Earthquake Damage
  • Emergency response: Earthquake in Monterey Bay, California.
  • A VIP needs to be evacuated.
  • Two primary users:
    • - California National Guard, Sacramento HQ (state-level emergency command center)
    • - Monterey Field Operations Center (first-responders coordination)
  • They interact to find the best possible plan of action

Map of Monterey Bay Area
  • Two sources of data:
    • - NGA Local Topographic Data Store (LTDS or TDS)
      - military symbology
    • - USGS The National Map (TNM)
      - civilian symbology

CCI Schema Automation for Semantics Support

To facilitate model-based development, interactive instruments (Germany) adapted their ShapeChange tool for UML-to-XML schema automation, to ease development of semantics, portrayal, and GML application schema, subject to domain-specific constraints.
