Innovating Geospatial Data Processing, Analysis, and Visualization

In OGC’s annual testbeds, major sponsoring organisations put forth geospatial IT problems. OGC staff integrate these requirements into a set of software architectures, and technology providers then receive support and funding to collaboratively research and rapidly develop prototype solutions. Eventually, the results are handed over to the OGC Standards Program where they take the form of consensus-based open standards and best practices.

Testbed-13 addressed seven topics as illustrated in the figure below. (1) client technology improvements to handle RESTful service implementations, MapML and protrayal challenges and to cope with limited bandwidth situations, (2) OGC Web service interfaces and data models have been improved to deal with data that is fit-for-purpose as well as new compliance tests that help ensuring interoperability,

(3) architectural aspects such as asynchronous interaction patterns, dynamic chaining of workflows and synchronization, and heterogeneous security environments, (4) dynamic sources and communities with specific requirements on advanced data modeling, 3D data streaming and visualization, vector tiling, CDB, quality models, and offline data containers, i.e. GeoPackages, (5) communities and social situations that require complex data handling made simple for non-geospatial experts in mass migration scenarios or in the aviation and climate change research communities, (6) cloud computing with focus on standards-based deployment and execution of applications in heterogeneous cloud infrastructures, and (7) Big data, with focus on data access and data processing physically close to the actual data archives.

Final Demonstration Event

The final demonstration event took place at USGS headquaters in Reston, VA (USA), on December 12-13, 2017. The two days event provided a summary of all work items addressed in Testbed-13 in the morning, followed by a more technical overview in the afternoon. The second day was used to reflect on the achievements of the Testbed, to discuss the knowledge transfer into the OGC Standards Program, and to elaborate ideas for future activities .
