The 1st ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on Geospatial Data Access and Processing APIs (SpatialAPI 2019)

Tuesday, 5 November, 2019 - 09:00
Tuesday, 5 November, 2019 - 17:00

Part of 27th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM SIGSPATIAL 2019)
Tuesday November 5 - Friday November 8, 2019
Chicago, Illinois, USA

Call for Proposals
Proposals can be submitted to the following submission page.

The proposals are limited to two pages including references. Please use the same template of the SIGSPATIAL conference as explained at

The proposals will be reviewed by the workshop chairs and advisory committee. In case of acceptance, at least one presenter will have to register to the SpatialAPI workshop.

The goal of this workshop is to provide students and researchers with hands-on experience with useful APIs such as web APIs or library APIs related to spatial data processing. At the same time, it gives an opportunity for API providers to reach out to targeted audience that can use their APIs. This will be an excellent opportunity for researchers to get familiar with the APIs that are available for their research and development. At the same time, the API providers will be able to get a direct feedback for their users to understand how to further improve their APIs and make them more user-friendly.
The tutorials will be done in a classroom-style setting where the audience will bring their laptops to follow the directions of the presenter. The room will be provided with a projector for the presenter and power and Internet for everyone. The organizers will be happy to entertain additional requirements by the presenters based on availability. We will encourage the speakers to share their material before the tutorials so that students can download any required datasets and install any prerequisite software.

Co-chair: Ahmed Eldawy <eldawy [at]> (University of California, Riverside)
Co-chair: George Percivall <gpercivall [at]> (The Open Geospatial Consortium - OGC)

Advisory Board
Michael Carey (UCI)
Peter Bauman (Rasdaman/Jacobs University Bremen)
Peter Vretanos (Cubewerx)

Tentative Program
We plan to have an opening session where we give a brief introduction to the workshop, introduce all the tutorials that will be given throughout the workshop and challenge the participants to evaluate the APIs for opportunities of interoperability, common/reusable structures and convergence. We will invite each presenter to give a 10-15 minute introduction to their system or service to convince the audience to attend their tutorial. After that, the individual tutorials will start. We will have one- and two-hour tutorials depending on the scope and the expected interest in each one. One-hour tutorials will focus on getting started with the API and identifying the available resources that the users can further read. Two-hour tutorials will be for tutorials that can provide a complete case study that uses different aspects of the system.
The day will end with an open discussion about the future of geospatial APIs, e.g., what did the participants see as simplest to use and most powerful to achieve their needs?, what opportunities are there for coordination of API Standards with the API code libraries?, what other APIs that the participants would like to see in the future whether those APIs already exist or are not yet existent?
