Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative, Phase 2
The U.S. Census Bureau sponsored the second phase of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Initiative, CIPI-2, an OGC pilot project. Census used the OGC's rapid-prototyping process to develop two prototype systems: an online system to update governmental unit boundary information for existing incorporated places, and an OpenGIS® Specification conformant server solution for Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER®) data. The specifications implemented in the prototype were WMS, WFS and GML. The online editing system is the first step to replacing the current manual system on the Web. The standards based server allows the Bureau's data to be used in conjunction with other local, state, and federal data and mapping services.
This initiative was announced on 22 Sept 2002.
