OGC Naming Authority Subcommittee

The OGC NID (URN scheme) was approved by IETF/IESG in April 2008. The OGC urn designation is registered with IANA and is documented in RFC 5165 (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc5165.html). A requirement for having a registered urn is that the OGC must have a naming authority. This authority is responsible for reviewing and registering any proposed OGC urn usage. At the June 2008 Potsdam meetings, the TC and the PC formally approved constituting the OGC Naming Authority (OGC-NA) as a sub-committee of the OGC Technical Committee. A summary of the OGC URN scheme can be found at http://www.opengeospatial.org/ogcUrnPolicy.

The OGC-NA subsequently proposed that http URIs be used to persistently identify OGC resources instead of URNs, with arguments formally presented in an OGC Whitepaper http://www.opengis/doc/uris . This policy was approved by the OGC TC in June 2010 and adopted for OGC as a whole. The OGC-NA has developed a series of more detailed policies

These are available from http://www.opengeospatial.org/ogc/policies/directives.
