David Schell, who founded the OGC and who was for many years the OGC's president, CEO and chairman, was presented with a “Making a Difference” Award by Jack Dangermond, Esri's president, last week at the Esri Federal GIS Conference. Dangermond opened the conference by presenting the award.

Geospatial World Forum 2012

There are many, many international geospatial conferences. There are those dedicated to scientific topics, some related to specific topics, such as the GSDI Association conferences and spatial data infrastructures, and then there are many vendor-specific conferences and exhibitions. However, there are very few geospatial events dedicated to bringing together all the industry leaders from the public sector, the private sector, academia and research.

Harvard Center for Geographic Analysis seeks WorldMap Participants

The Center for Geographic Analysis at Harvard recently announced Version 1.0 of WorldMap, a milestone in our longstanding effort to build a public technology platform to support research collaboration around geospatial information at Harvard. WorldMap is open source software and provides scholars anywhere in the world with the tools to discover, organize, visualize, create, share, and publish geographically referenced information.

Gazetteers provide valuable information about geospatial features, including their names, locations, and feature types. In fact, geographic names are the most common form of locational reference and are key to accessing, linking, and mapping other online information. Since this resource is so important, there's growing interest in sharing and updating geographic names across standard Web services interfaces. To meet this challenge OGC members have developed an updated approach for sharing geographic names - the OGC Gazetteer Service Best Practice.
