OGC’s Testbed-14 conclusion and demo event at ESA/ESRIN

Testbed-14, the biggest Innovation Program initiative executed by OGC in 2018, came to an end last week at ESA/ESRIN in Frascati, Italy with a final demonstration.

 

The demonstration event focused on a set of selected results with a strong emphasis on the Enterprise Exploitation Platform task. Cristiano Lopes (ESA) opened the well attended event. As Testbed-14 chief architect, I explained the opportunities of the Innovation Program for participants, sponsors, and the general geospatial IT community, before providing an overview of all Testbed-14 results. Paulo Sacramento, supported by Panagiotis (Peter) Vretanos, Christophe Noel, David Byrns, and Jérôme Gasperi, then led through the Earth Exploitation Platform presentations and illustrated an example workflow in a video. This work focussed on two aspects: First, to make arbitrary applications available for ad-hoc deployment and execution by other users on secured cloud platforms where necessary scalability is provided to handle Big Data satellite scenes; and, second, to orchestrate selected applications into workflows that can then be executed like simple applications.

After a great lunch (I’m always impressed by the variety and quality of the ESA canteen!), Stephan Meissel and Sergio Ferraresi presented how low-level, non-georeferenced satellite data can be served by OGC Web Coverage Service (WCS) and corresponding Coverage Implementation Schema (CIS). The work even included complex scanning modes such as vertical curtains produced by CloudSat, as well as MODIS and VIIRS swath data. Kevin Heffner then introduced the integration of Machine Learning models into standardized spatial data infrastructures.

 

Security is increasingly built into OGC service specifications as it is very important for federated cloud architectures. Héctor Rodríguez presented the corresponding Testbed-14 results, before Peter Vretanos gave an update on the new resource-oriented service types with OpenAPI support, first of all WFS 3.0. The meeting concluded with Craig Lee presenting a conceptual architecture and its possible implementation for federated cloud platforms.
