The OGC Serves the Mobile Industry
The OGC's process and standards play a critical role as business requirements for communication of location become a key issue for the mobile industry.
There are two new OGC Working Groups and several existing Working Groups that will have a positive impact on the mobile industry's uses of location information. Mobile use cases and requirements are central to the work of the new Augmented Reality Markup Language (ARML) 2.0 Standards Working Group (SWG) and the (soon to be chartered) IndoorML SWG, and also the continuing work of the OGC Location Services (OpenLS) and Open GeoSMS SWGs.
OGC member and primary evangelist for the Open GeoSMS standard is Kuo-Yu 'slayer' Chuang from ITRI, a government funded research institute in Taiwan. You might enjoy his short post describing the impact the standard has already had on his life. He describes the value he experienced as “disaster management.”
The IndoorGML SWG released its charter for comment in mid-January and will hold its first face-to-face meeting in March at the OGC's Austin Technical Committee meeting. This SWG aims to provide a common schema framework for interoperability between indoor navigation applications, which cover a wide spectrum of application areas, such as indoor LBS, indoor web map services, indoor emergency control, guiding services for visually handicapped persons in indoor space, and indoor robotics.
For the long-term success of the OGC's work in the mobile domain and these new SWGs, it’s necessary to have members who require the standards and will contribute to their definition.
Tying these exciting activities together and in support of the consortium’s expansion with new members from the mobile industry segment, a Mobile Industry Engagement Plan for 2012 is under development.
Our objectives are to:
- Make mobile industry leaders and companies more aware of the OGC’s outstanding contributions
- Design/collaborate with mobile industry associations on one or more projects focusing on OGC implementations on mobile devices
- Increase the number and diversity of companies with mobile-centric businesses within the OGC membership
